Summer Work - Week 2/3

I started off week 2 with a trip to Waskatneau in order to reimage the student laptops. I was a little nervous at first because the last time I was imaging the student laptops in Waskatneau, the laptops were about 95% done when the power cut out on me for about 2 minutes. This little cut on power caused all that installing/work to get corrupted and I had to start all over again. Luckily it didn't happen this time. The rest of the second week was spent repairing old laptops that were out of warranty and converting some laptops into student laptops for a school. This process is a little bit of a pain in the butt because of the labelling and cleaning that needs to be done. But the laptops sure like nice in the end. I also spent time getting all the laptops/equipment ready for the new teachers that will be rolling in next year (12 new recruits i think)

Week 3 was a lot of fun because there was lots of stuff on the go. I spent lots of time at Notre Dame High getting the new Comm Tech Room ready. Our Comm Tech room will almost be like a mini studio where students can film/record audio or video and use various technology equipment to present them in exciting ways. This is a pretty big project and there are lots of pieces that need to fall into place for this room to be finished. First I had to pull in some new network ports (14) since there will be a few computers in there.

I also spent a solid couple days doing nothing but cleaning the laptop carts and relabelling. Another exciting thing about this week was the release of Apple's newest operating system OS X Lion 10.7. It boasts a lot of new features (some good and some scary). I've been playing around on it for quite a bit and I could talk about it here, but I think I might save it for another blog post because there is lots to cover. If I have time i'll post a review. But that is pretty much it for now.

Summer Work - Week 1

One of my biggest jobs over every summer is re-imaging roughly 800 Macs throughout my area. For those of you who aren't familiar with the term "imaging", basically it means we erase the hard drives on a computer, and re-install the operating system, plus lots of other programs/preferences. Probably the hardest part of this whole process is the physical setup that needs to be done for the laptops. Tables need to be brought in, power bars, extension cords, switches, ethernet cables, etc. The end result looks like the picture below.

Typically I can image anywhere between 30-40 laptops at once. But this really depends on how much power/plugs are available. I tend to be cautious on how many laptops I do at once because I've flipped some breakers while i was re-imaging before and it's not a whole lot of fun when your laptops are about 80% done then they get corrupted due to the power being cut off. And to do that many laptops takes anywhere from 2-3 hours. Once the laptops are done imaging there is a little bit of setup that needs to be done before we put them away. Things like software updates, connecting to the wireless, a couple software activations, etc. Luckily I script most of this stuff so I don't need to do everything by hand. And just incase you don't know what scripts are....they are basically a batch of commands that I send to the computer to make it do whatever I want.

So while the laptops are imaging and I have a couple hours to kill, I thought i'd go to NDH and begin taking out all our stuff in the portables that are getting moved this summer. I had to remove 3 SMART Boards along with the projectors, and I had to pull out whatever cabling I could out of there incase we ever need it again.

Next week I plan on re-imaging the laptops in Holy Family, and then i'll begin re-labeling/re-stickering whatever laptops need it. Yep we do that too!

Thanks for reading

Welcome!

Hey Everybody

Welcome to my tech blog. There is nothing great here yet, but over time I plan on putting lots of goodies in here with regards to technology. You can look forward to seeing posts about what big projects I'm working on, tech tips, podcasts, etc. Because contrary to popular belief, I don't sit at the tech shop all day. With this blog you'll also be able to get some insight into our tech world, and get a sense of how/why we do what we do in order to best meet the needs of Lakeland Catholic.
