Below are the clubs students can become members of. Students are strongly encouraged to participate in one or more of the school clubs, beginning in their grade 9 year and continuing throughout high school. There are two significant reasons for this:
*The life of the school is dependent on the people who are members of the school. When students contribute to the school community, the school becomes a stronger and more vibrant place - a place where learning and growing happens in many ways and not just within the classroom walls.
*Most scholarship applications have a community service component. By being involved in the school clubs, students will have examples to include in the community service portion of their applications.
So ... be an active member of your school community!
STUDENTS' UNION
This group of students take responsibility for organizing a variety of spirit activities to involve as many students as possible. They take on a leadership role in the planning and hosting of these events. Events include three school dances, monthly spirit days, as well as special events like Halloween, Valentine's Day and St. Patrick's Day. Students' Union is also responsible for the school concession. There are 7 executive positions (president, vice president, secretary, treasurer, communications, activities and grade representatives) as well as members at large. The members meet twice a month during lunch to brainstorm and plan for the various activities. The president must be in grade 11 or 12. This is a fun group of people to be part of and you get a chance to really be involved in many different events. Come and join us!
THE YOUNG ADOPTERS (TYA)
The Young Adopters is the longest running club in the school. NDHS is also the longest running school sponsor of Plan International in all of Alberta. The TYA sponsors five children from underdeveloped nations in the third world. Our biggest fundraiser takes place at Thanksgiving with the annual penny race. Other fundraisers include pizza sales and various other noon hour activities. Meetings take place regularly at noon hour on Mondays.
YOUTH LITURGICAL LEADERSHIP
YLL is a group for students interested in helping to plan, lead, and participate in whole school faith development. We run monthly celebrations, either a Mass or a Liturgy, and seasonal events in Advent and Lent. On four days throughout the school year we meet for half a day with the YLL groups from the other schools in Lakeland Catholic in order to develop skills, knowledge, and support to carry out this leadership role. While our celebrations and activities must be of a Catholic nature, YLL welcomes all students interested in leading faith development in our school. Please see Mr. Sumner for more information.
AMBASSADORS
The Ambassadors are a group of high school students who help to make the transition easier for the new grade 9 students at the start of the year. The Ambassadors spend time with three grade 9 students to help them understand the school expectations, get to know the staff members, and learn about the school clubs and how they can get involved. There are three formal meetings scheduled in the month of September so the Ambassadors can share the information about the school with the grade 9 students. The commitment is most intense during the first month of school, but the Ambassadors also coordinate the grade 8 orientation session which happens in May. Being an Ambassador is an important role as it helps to establish Notre Dame High as a family who help and support one another.
JUSTICE LEAGUE
The Justice League is made up of a group of students who want to make a positive difference by working toward social justice within our community and the world. These students promote awareness of various injustices and coordinate fundraising campaigns to help assist justice organizations like Development and Peace. The Justice League also works to continue the school's support of the Mexican family we have been sponsoring since the school's first Mission Trip in 2007. This group meets twice a month during lunch.
ART CLUB
The Impressionists Art Club was formed to give students an opportunity to work on art projects outside of class, or for those students unable to take Art Class. Typically we meet once a week with Mrs. Scott.
STUDENTS AGAINST DRINKING AND DRIVING (SADD)
SADD is an awareness organization that focuses on encouraging the youth in our school to make positive choices. Any student in our school is welcome and encouraged to become a member and help with our fund raising events. This year we have been selling coffee and hot chocolate in the mornings as well as hosting monthly lunchtime food sales. The money we raise will be used in the future to send students to the annual SADD conference held in October as well as to bring guest speakers to our school.
