This week my
class, the grade 4 Immersion’s from Notre Dame Elementary, had a great
opportunity to go to the awesome and wonderful Centennial Center for C-School.
This school is not like any other. First of all, you will receive a wonderful
and kind teacher, Mrs. Flynn. She is terrific. C-School is an awesome way to
learn different activities in different subjects. One of the things we did was
have a tour of the whole Centennial Center. For math, we had to count all the
stairs in the RJ Lalonde Arena and there are 350 stairs in all. Isn’t that a
lot of stairs? We also had to do a
shape hunt and measure the sides of all the shapes. In Language Arts, we did
reading and writing. We had to keep a journal of our daily activities and write
an article about C-School. For Science, we had to build a car that moves by
wind power. We also had to do a simple machine hunt. We found machines that we
had to put in the right category such as gears, screws, wedges, pulleys, and
wheels. Another thing we had to build was a catapult. For Physical education,
we went rock climbing and played Rainbow and Elimination. We also went to the
studio in the gym and did exercising on the bikes. Skating was another activity
we enjoyed as we played a game called French Bulldog. In Social Studies, we
played the ‘Fur Trade’ game. This one was my absolute favorite. In this game,
some of my classmates were the voyageurs and some were the company owners. The
voyageurs had to roll two dice to determine what animal they would get. The
higher the number, the bigger the animal. The animals were pictures on cards. The companies, Hudson Bay and North
West, would wait for the voyageurs to come and trade their fur for an item,
such as rifles, pots, fishing hooks, axes, knifes, etc. These items were also
pictures on cards. Once the company had their fur from the voyageurs, they
would go to the British, my teacher and the parent helper, to sell their fur to
receive money. The object of the game was to get as much money or as many furs
as possible. I enjoyed C-School so much that I hope I can go again next year!
