Notre Dame Elementary
Our virtue for the month of June is acceptance. This year we are specifically focusing on acceptance of people with disabilities.
Grade 4EN helped to lead the assembly where this virtue was shared with all of the students. Our affirmation this month is from the book of Romans:
Grade 4EN presented our scripture for the month, "One Body with Many Parts" from 1 Corinthians 12:12-26. In this scripture we learn that we are God's body of believers. People are all different but all part of God’s body, just like our feet and ears are different but they are part of our body. We are all unique and different in our own special ways. Some of us are taller; some of us are better at different things. It was God's perfect plan to create us all differently. Since we are all parts of God's body, we need to treat all people with kindness, caring, love and appreciation. We should never make fun of people for being different because God made them that way! Grade 4 used a Mr. Potato Head and an outline of a person to visually represent how we are all part of God's body.
Another very important thing that we learned was that even though someone has a disability – their life, though it may have extra challenges, can be very normal. To help inspire students, we showed a video of a young Australian man, Nick Vujicic. Nick was born without arms or legs and given no medical reason for this condition. Faced with countless challenges and obstacles, God has given him the strength to surmount what others might call impossible. You can view the video the students viewed at:

"God has used me to let people know in countless schools, churches, prisons, orphanages, hospitals, stadiums and in face-to-face encounters with individuals how very precious they are to God. Secondly, it's my pleasure to assure them that God does have a plan for their lives that is purposeful. For God took my life, one that others might disregard as having any significance and filled me with His purpose and showed me His plans to move hearts and lives toward Him. Understanding this, though faced with struggles, you can overcome too.
Be encouraged today as you read this promise from the Lord found in Jeremiah 29:11 of the Bible, "For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."
Grade 4EN also performed our song of the month, "Shout to the Lord".
Mrs. Reid concluded the assembly by doing a presentation with students about acceptance of others with disabilities. The focus was on how each and everyone of us is God's creation. Grade 4 students helped to act out the challenges that a blind person would have to face and what we could do to accept a person with a visual disability as part of our school community. For the rest of the month, students will be discussing the challenges of a different disability each day. They will also be asked to give concrete examples of how they could make someone with that disability feel accepted. In families this month, students will be learning how to sign their name.
