Self-Control Assembly

You can see in these pictures students from KEM and 3EA presenting to the school the virtue for the month of January, Self-Control. They explain to all students that when they are pressure to do something they need to use the ASK strategy to do the right thing.
A: Ask yourself the question: What would Jesus do?
S: Say no to negative pressure
K: Know the positive options

Farewell Mrs. Gervais - We Will Miss You!

Students, staff and parents gathered on November 23 to bid farewell to Mrs. Brenda Gervais who recently retired. Mrs. Gervais has been an excellent secretary and "school mom" to hundreds of kids over the years at Notre Dame Elementary. Each grade level performed a song for her and then a student and staff created electronic scrapbook called, "The Important Book" was read aloud. Each class gave Mrs. Gervais a rose at the end while the song "Thank You For Giving to the Lord" played. Mrs. Gervias received many tearful hugs as individual students said their good-byes. We thank Mrs. Gervais for her years of service and dedication to the students, staff and parents or Notre Dame Elementary. We wish her well on her retirement and not having to use her alarm clock anymore (unless it is to wake up in time to catch a plane to Mexico).

Invitation to Parents From Education Minister Thomas A. Lukaszuk

Direct Link to Alberta Education Site

EDUCATION

Office of the Minister

To: Interested Members of the Public

As the new Minister of Education, I want to provide you with the opportunity to share your views about education in Alberta. Since the introduction of the proposed Education Act in April 2011, much has changed. Our government has made a renewed commitment to the education system, and it is important to confirm that we are indeed moving in a direction that reflects the desires and wishes of Albertans.

On November 15, I announced the opportunity for public input as we begin to review the proposed Education Act. The first component is a series of seven full-day meetings, called Our Children, Our Future: Getting It Right, scheduled for late November and early December 2011.

The new Education Act must support and sustain learning environments in which students can thrive through flexible, personalized learning. By opening discussion to the public, especially to students, we can ensure this legislation reflects Albertans’ vision for their education system and that it has a direct and positive impact on Alberta classrooms now and for years to come.

Many of the ideas emphasized in the earlier draft will likely carry forward because it:

· enables school boards to be more responsive to local needs;

· engages students from Kindergarten to graduation;

· better supports inclusion of learners with differing needs, cultures and abilities; and

· ensures that schools are caring, respectful and safe environments all remain important priorities for this government.

I invite you to attend one of the scheduled meetings identified below. I also ask you to encourage participation among others in your community for whom the meetings would be a new experience by passing along this information.

We have invited community leaders and education authorities to attend the meetings, however, the vast majority of registrations are being held for students, parents, teachers and others who have a broad interest in education – as learners, as taxpayers and as future employers.

The meeting dates are as follows:

Date

Location

Saturday, November 26

Edmonton

Tuesday, November 29

Red Deer

Thursday, December 1

Calgary

Saturday, December 3

Bonnyville (8:00 – 4:00, lunched provided)

Monday, December 5

Lethbridge

Wednesday, December 7

Fort McMurray

Friday, December 9

Peace River

For more information, and to register, please follow this link: http://ideas.education.alberta.ca/engage/current-initiatives/education-act-getting-it-right. Following submission of registration, participants will receive a confirmation. This will include venue information and pre-meeting reading materials.

While space is limited and preregistration is required, those who are unable to participate in a community meeting will also have other channels for submitting their thoughts on the future of education in Alberta. We expect to have online options ready in a little over a week and will ensure Albertans are aware of how to provide us with their input. Of course, I also welcome traditional forms of communication, such as letters and emails.

If you have any questions, please contact the project team by email at Engage.Education@gov.ab.ca or by phone at 780-422-1484 (dial 310-0000 first for toll-free access in Alberta).

Thank you for your interest as we continue this important work on behalf of education in Alberta. Your input will be considered as we work toward reintroducing the Education Act in spring 2012.

Sincerely,

Thomas A. Lukaszuk

Minister of Education

MLA, Edmonton – Castle Downs

Community MD Project

Notre Dame students participated in a community project for the MD of Bonnyville. They were asked to share 'what it means to be be a student in North East Alberta.' Each student created a picture to represent their thoughts. The student art was then posted collage style on plywood boards. To represent our Notre Dame family spirt, one board was dedicated to class pictures. All the boards can be seen on the construction fence by the new MD building. Check it out!!!

Books for grade 2 students

We were very blessed to have had Ginette (daughter of Mme. Gisele Kleinmann) and her husband here at the school on October 28th to award all of our grade 2 students with books in memory of her mom.

Mme. Kleinmann was an amazing woman and teacher. She made everywhere she went a better place. Her smile was contagious and her love of life admirable. Mme. Kleinmann taught here for many years up until she retired and then continued to bless us by subbing at any opportunity we could give her. We are all truly better people for having known her.

Fire Safety Visit

PROTECT YOUR FAMILY FROM FIRE!!!!!

Thank to the Bonnyville firefighters for observing our firedrill and giving us feedback on our evacuation procedures. Students also enjoyed the presentation about fire safety. There were reminders given about escape routes and testing fire detectors. Some students also got to dress up like firefighters. The real firefighters did a demonstration about putting on their equipment and how to crawl into a fire. Tons of prizes were awarded to students.

ATCO Energy Theatre

ATCO Energy Theatre performed their Super Power! show and with a cast of heroes and villains for NDE students. The evil super villains, Rocket Socket and Carmen Monoxide, return and are up to their same sneaky tricks! But the hero, the Blue Flame, has his own plan and invites Rocket Socket (Rocky) and Carmen onto his game show, Power Game with the Blue Flame! The Blue Flame tells Rocky and Carmen they will gain more power with every correct answer. And they do! The villains start feeling more powerful and are having fun without realizing they are teaching kids how to avoid their dangers. The Blue Flame, one of the Power Teams most popular super heroes, knows that when kids have “brain power” – they have what it takes to defeat the super villains.

This 45-minute musical, Power Game with the Blue Flame, is designed to help teach kids about natural gas, carbon monoxide and electricity and how to stay safe in and around their homes. The students learned how natural gas and electricity are made and how they travel and get to our homes. Throughout the performance, students were active participants using their own “brain power” to defeat the evil super villains.

Thank you to ATCO Energy for financing this excellent safety learning performance.
