Advent

Article One: Christmas Cards

As a part of Advent the junior high class at Holy Family Catholic School has been making Christmas cards with messages of hope and joy to be attached to the gifts on the giving tree. The 6,7,8 students have elected to forego a personal gift exchange this year and to bring gifts to donate to the giving tree instead. They have planned to attach a personally made Christmas card to each gift hoping to spread the love of Christmas to all.

Article Two: Prayer Web

The junior high class at Holy Family Catholic School participated in creating a prayer web. Each student prayed for another classmate something particular about that person. Prayers included wishes of health for the students loved ones, safety for relatives overseas, and thanksgiving for the talents that the students share with the class. Each student who prayed was connected by a string to the student they prayed for until the whole class was connected in the web of prayers. Students learned that although we are not always directly connected from one prayer to another, the prayers of others always affect our lives and how we are connected as a group.

Halloween For Hunger

Holy Family has supported the local food bank for the past two years and are committed to supporting it as long as it can. Every Friday is a “Food Bank Friday,” where our students are encouraged to bring in items for the food bank. Students at Holy Family learn about the importance of food banks in all communities and how many people access the food bank every month in the province of Alberta as well as the rest of Canada. We contribute anywhere between 100-130 pounds of non-perishable goods to the food bank every month.

This year, in addition to regular food bank donations, Holy Family decided to participate in the Halloween for Hunger Campaign from the Free the Children Organization. Our goal was to collect at least 130 pounds of food to match our September donations.

The Junior High class went out in the Village of Waskatenau to deliver fliers and inform the community about the Halloween for Hunger campaign. Residents were encouraged to participate by either leaving donations at the door (if they were not going to be home) or passing along donations to students as they toured the community on October 31st.

On Halloween the entire school dressed up and they went door to door in the village. The students were very eager to knock on doors and collect donations. Instead of "Trick or Treat!" they called out "Halloween for Hunger!" Parent volunteers helped out by walking with the students or driving vehicles to pick up the heavy bags and boxes of food items that the students collected. Our were able to talk with many residents and thank them personally for their donations.

All the donations were brought back to the school and the results were astounding. The food bank collected the donations and it weighed in at just over 730 pounds. Holy Family is extremely proud of our students, parents, staff and community for helping this wonderful campaign and making a difference to those who need our help.

Science In Motion

On Wednesday October 12, the "Science in Motion" team from the Telus World of Science visited Holy Family to help our students learn about and get excited for science. Each class participated in individual hour long interactive presentations and were given the opportunity to learn about and perform many experiments and tests related to grade level science topics. Presentations and curriculum covered included "Chilling out" for hot and cold, "Gravel, Grit and Grime" for rocks and minerals, "Green Scene" for waste and our world and "Simple Machines" for mechanical systems. Students also had the opportunity to play and solve a variety of brain teaser games and activities throughout the day at a display in the hallway. We had a great time bringing this excellent program to our school and we can't wait to see them again next year!

Being Green

The grade 4 and 5 class at Holy Family have made “Being Green” their focus for the year. The class has been responsible for the daily school recycling and composting programs and recently hosted a very special guest to help them continue on their "Being Green" journey. On Wednesday, October 12, the Telus World of Science "Science In Motion" group visited Holy Family for the day. Students had the opportunity to participate in a number of experiments including: comparing the usage of electricity in a variety of household items, finding things in their everyday lives that are wasteful, matching a recycled product to the original product and making their own electricity. The knowledge gained from this visit will be used to brainstorm new ways that Holy Family can help be a little greener! Thanks Science In Motion!

Moral Intelligence Family Lunch Sep 28th

This week Holy Family students participated in a Moral Intelligence Family Lunch where student from all grades were able to work together in their school families on the topic of Empathy. All students are assigned a school family to provide opportunities to learn together and deepen their understanding about the virtue of the month. Holy Family uses the Moral Intelligence Program throughout the year to learn about a variety of virtues from a Catholic Perspective and how we can use those virtues to guide us in our lives. Students learned that empathy means "Putting yourself in someone else's place and understanding how they feel." and practiced ways to show empathy for others in a variety of situations. Students implemented the "See it, Be it Do it" skill on a daily basis throughout the month. First they wanted to SEE the situation, then imagine what it would feel like to BE in the situation and finally they decided what to DO to help the situation. During the empathy lunch, students watched an anti- bullying video to learn how empathy can help prevent bullying and they brainstormed the positive consequences that occur when we practice empathy in our daily lives. The students also nominated individuals in the school that showed outstanding Empathy in the school. We are very proud of our students and their active and engaged participation in our Moral Intelligence Program. We look forward to sharing more virtues as the year progresses. by Chris Corley photos by Chris Corley

Laptop Deployment

On Wednesday, September 14, Holy Family deployed laptops to all of its students. We are proud and grateful to have a one-to-one student to laptop ratio in all our classrooms. These valuable tools enhance student learning and provide students and teachers limitless opportunities to information and resources. Students this week learned about basic laptop care and how the laptops would be used during the school year. Article by Chris Corley Photos by Donna Barrow

Spaghetti Supper!

On Thursday, September 8th, Holy Family hosted the annual Spaghetti Supper and Fundraiser. This supper gives our staff a chance to get to know any new families and spend valuable time together as a school community. The school staff prepared and served supper for over 100 guests and raised just over $600. All the money raised will go directly to paying for field trip costs throughout the year. Holy Family would like to thank all the students, parents, relatives and community members that attended and donated at this wonderful event. Article by Chris Corley Photos by Chris Corley

4-5 Weekly News

The grade 4 and 5 class at Holy Family this week discussed and represented the qualities of God and how we can live in the image of God everyday. During this activity students reflected on the qualities of God and used clay to make representations. Some students created big hearts because God loves us, some created glasses and eyes because God sees all that we do and some created images of animals because God created all of nature.
