Rev. Stefano (Stephen) Penna
Born in Saskatoon, Father Penna studied philosophy at St. Thomas More College at the University of Saskatchewan, after which he completed his M.Div. and S.T.B. (summa cum laude) at Regis College at the Toronto School of Theology
He was ordained a priest of the Diocese of Saskatoon in 1986 and has served in both rural and urban parishes and worked as a chaplain to medical care facilities and college students.
Studies at Rome’s Gregorian University earned him an S.T.L. (summa cum laude) in Dogmatic Theology in 1989. Five years later he left to pursue doctoral research in the Philosophy of Religion and modern Philosophical Theology at Yale University. Having completed this work, Father Penna joined the faculty of St. Joseph’s College at the University of Alberta in 2002. There he has taught courses in Religious Education, Philosophy and Theology.
In addition to research in modern culture and religious experience, Father Penna has dedicated much of the last few years to working with Catholic educational communities across Western Canada in faith formation of teachers, administrators and trustees and in leadership development. A fruit of this work will be the publication of Journey to Jerusalem as a resource for Catholic schools.
Much sought after as a preacher and retreat master, Father Penna provides ministerial support for various parishes. He also currently serves as chairman of the Steering Committee of the Archdiocesan new evangelization initiative, Nothing More Beautifu.
Father Penna admits to a lifelong passion for teaching, especially guiding the next generation of teachers. “Constantly awed by the Mystery of the Eucharist,” he also rejoices in experiencing the Beauty of the Lord in art, music and literature, and lists his favourite movies as Dreyer’s The Passion of Joan of Arc and Ford’s High Noon. His favourite food is pasta alla Carbonara; his favourite pastime, conversation. His deep delight, however, is in his nephews and nieces, of which he now has nine.
